Medical Center Hires Lhota as an Executive
Three, in fact: New York University announced Friday that Mr. Lhota, 59, will be the new senior vice president, vice dean and chief of staff at NYU Langone Medical Center.
Dr. Robert I. Grossman, the dean and chief executive of NYU Langone, said in a statement that Mr. Lhota's responsibilities would include integrating the hospital and N.Y.U.'s medical school, advising on "issues of management and policy," and overseeing emergency preparedness — a portfolio with special significance in light of Hurricane Sandy's devastating effects on the medical center.
Dr. Grossman added that Mr. Lhota would "serve as a representative and ambassador to external constituents, including government and elected officials." That raises the possibility that as part of his job, Mr. Lhota will have to make overtures to the administration of his former opponent, to whom he lost by 49 percentage points.
Mr. Lhota was not available for comment, but in a statement he said he was "excited to join the talented leadership team at NYU Langone."
"I am looking forward to taking part in what lies ahead for this great organization," he said.
Mr. Lhota does not have a background in medical organizations, but he has extensive administrative experience, having run the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, held executive positions at the Madison Square Garden Company and Cablevision Systems Corporation, and served as deputy mayor for operations under Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani.
Mr. Lhota succeeds Anthony E. Shorris who, in an odd bit of symmetry, left NYU Langone to become Mayor de Blasio's deputy mayor for operations.
According to tax documents, Mr. Shorris earned $1,039,998 in the most recent year for which his pay was reported. A spokeswoman for NYU Langone did not comment on Mr. Lhota's salary.
