Giants 20, Redskins 6: For Giants, a Forgettable Season Ends With a Victory and Questions

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Eli Manning's first pass of the season was an interception. So was his last.
It may seem too obvious to sum up the Giants' disastrous year with a pair of bookend turnovers by the player who is the face of the franchise, but it is also pretty hard to ignore the symmetry and symbolism.
If there was a play that exemplified the Giants on offense this season, it was the interception, usually one batted in the air. That was precisely how Manning's last pass was picked off Sunday afternoon.
As an added affront in a season full of insult and injury, Manning, who has started 151 consecutive N.F.L. games, left after the first-half interception with an ankle sprain.
The Giants won the season finale against the Washington Redskins, 20-6, a game played in driving rain at MetLife Stadium, where roughly a quarter of the seats were occupied at the game's start. The Giants conclude the season with a 7-9 record, their first losing season since 2004, when Tom Coughlin was in his first year as coach.
But even in victory, it was a difficult and unsightly day for the home team. Manning's injury was only one of several for the Giants, the most notable being a broken leg sustained by left tackle Will Beatty.
The extent and exact location of Beatty's fracture was not revealed by the team, but his right leg was awkwardly bent backward during a collision. A complex fracture and a long rehabilitation would only complicate the overhaul to the Giants' offensive line that was expected before Beatty's injury.
Also leaving the game to injury were wide receivers Reuben Randle and Hakeem Nicks. Randle has a swollen knee and Nicks a sprained ankle. Another lineman, James Brewer, was sidelined with a leg injury.
The game itself was full of blunders, drops and wobbly passes. Neither team compiled more than 300 yards of offense. The Redskins (3-13), led by the backup quarterback Kirk Cousins playing for Robert Griffin III, had only two first downs in the first half.
Manning's injury occurred late in the first half when he was nearly sacked on a pass and took a hard hit to his left ankle by Washington's Chris Baker. Manning got up and appeared to be trying to shake off the blow, though he moved hesitantly as he approached the line for the next play.
Taking the snap, Manning threw quickly and high to tight end Brandon Myers — he has been throwing high to Myers all season — and as has happened repeatedly, the pass was deflected backward and was intercepted by Josh Wilson.
After the turnover, Manning began limping off the field. It is rare for Manning to show the effects of any contact on the field, but as he got closer to the sideline his limp became pronounced. Once off the field, he avoided putting any weight on his left leg and was helped toward the tunnel to the locker room.
It was Manning's 27th interception of the year, a career-high and a team record.
The Giants began the day as if they were turning back the clock with an offensive display that resembled the ineptitude of their efforts during their 0-6 start. They had one first down on their first three drives. Fortunately for the Giants, the Redskins' offense was not doing much more.
The scoring drought ended when Giants running back Andre Brown, who has had a series of fumbles in the last quarter of the season, lost the ball on a rushing carry deep in Giants territory.
Washington recovered the fumble at the Giants 18-yard line and turned that possession into a 31-yard field goal by Kai Forbath.
But the Giants' offense came to life on the next possession with Peyton Hillis running for 13 yards up the middle and Jerrel Jernigan catching a 30-yard pass from Manning. That set up Jerrigan's athletic, over-the-shoulder, 24-yard touchdown reception.
The Giants extended their lead on their next possession as Manning threw for 35 yards deep down the middle of the field for Nicks. It was the kind of reception Nicks once made repeatedly. This year, it would be one of the highlights of his substandard contribution to the team. It was only his second reception inside an opponent's 20.
Two plays later, Nicks sprained his ankle and was called for offensive pass interference on the same play. The Giants' drive stalled and they settled for a 34-yard Josh Brown field goal.
In the final minute before intermission, taking possession after Manning's interception, Forbath kicked a 49-yard field goal to cut the Giants' lead to 4 points.
The third quarter was mostly a series of turnovers and ineffective offensive output by both teams. After a Washington fumble was recovered by the Giants at the Redskins' 16, the Giants backup quarterback Curtis Painter gave the football back. Emulating Manning, Painter threw a pass toward Myers in the end zone that deflected off Washington's London Fletcher, then was tipped into the air by Myers. Redskins safety Reed Doughty snatched the ball out of the air, ending a promising drive.
But Washington could not hold onto the football for long as the Giants' Justin Tuck stripped Cousins as he was trying to pass. Cousins was intercepted on the Redskins' next drive. Neither turnover led to Giants points.
A 49-yard touchdown on an end-around play by Jernigan put the Giants ahead by 17-6 on the final play of the third quarter. Painter faked a run up the middle and then handed off to Jernigan, who was sprinting left. Jernigan, who has had a strong finish playing for the team's top receivers, who are all injured, broke a couple of tackles on his way to the end zone.
The Giants ended the scoring with a 38-yard fourth-quarter field goal.
Extra Points
Giants right tackle Justin Pugh became just the third Giants first-round draft pick to start every game in his rookie season Sunday. The last Giants first-round pick to do so was Lawrence Taylor in 1981.
